Pushing children out of the way of a speeding car, this 88-year-old crossing guard was killed. I believe he deserves our respect.

In a world often filled with stories of superheroes on the big screen, it’s easy to forget that real-life heroes walk among us every day. These heroes don’t wear capes or possess superhuman powers, but they do extraordinary things, sometimes even at the cost of great sacrifice. One such hero was 88-year-old Bob Nill, a beloved crossing guard in Kansas City, Kansas, who gave his life in 2020 to save the lives of children.

Known affectionately as “Mr. Bob” by the students of Christ the King Parish School, Bob Nill had dedicated five years of his life to ensuring the safety of children on their way to school. His kind and caring nature had made him a cherished figure within the community.

Tragedy struck one fateful Tuesday morning in 2020 when a speeding black sedan recklessly raced through Nill’s crosswalk at around 8 a.m. Sensing the impending danger, without a second thought, Mr. Bob put himself in harm’s way to protect two children who were about to step into the path of the oncoming vehicle.

“He stopped [two kids], and they listened, thank God, but then he, of course, was the victim,” recalled school principal Cathy Fithian.

Eyewitnesses described how the 88-year-old hero pushed the children back, narrowly saving them from harm but unfortunately taking the full force of the car’s impact himself. Randy, Mr. Nill’s nephew, shared that this courageous act was entirely in character for his uncle, who had always shown a deep commitment to his community.

“What my Uncle Bob did for just getting little kids across the street seemed probably trivial to some people, but for him, it was a really important job, and now, we really know how important it was. He maybe saved some lives,” said Randy.

Before becoming a crossing guard, Bob Nill had a career in banking and had served in the Coast Guard. Even in his retirement, he found a way to continue giving back to his community by ensuring the safety of its youngest members.

“This was something I think he felt like he could help children and help himself feel good about what he was doing,” explained Randy.

The tragic incident deeply impacted the community, and Christ the King Parish School released a heartfelt statement on their Facebook page, emphasizing the heroism of Mr. Nill.

“We would like to give you an update on our crossing guard, Mr. Nill. Our hearts are heavy as we inform you of his passing. Please continue to keep Mr. Nill and his family in your prayers as well as the students, parents, and teachers who witnessed today’s accident.”

“Also know that Mr. Nill is a hero. He stopped two of our students from crossing the road as the car approached.”

Bob Nill’s story serves as a poignant reminder that heroes come in all forms, and their acts of courage and selflessness leave a lasting impact on the lives they touch. While he may no longer be with us, his legacy of bravery and community spirit will continue to inspire us all.
