A mother in the Encinitas Union School District of California made a powerful statement during a school board meeting in October 2022, which resurfaced in a video from spring 2023. She questioned the labeling of a drag show as “family-friendly.” She argued that if such events were considered family-friendly, one could label anything the same way, even things clearly inappropriate for children.
The mother passionately defended her stance, asking, “What is it about a grown man in a sparkly bra and a leather skirt twerking near minors that’s ‘family-friendly’?” She criticized the school board for promoting events that sexualize young children in a world grappling with child pornography and sex trafficking.
The controversy stemmed from the school district’s announcement of a “queerest free Halloween party for youth and families” in 2022, causing parental outrage over what they perceived as the sexualization of children.
In response, Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner-Horvath supported the event, claiming it was an attempt by out-of-town homophobic extremists to divide the community, while emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and support for LGBTQIA+ members in the area.
