Lassie’s little Timmy reveals the secrets of TV’s most famous dog

For 17 seasons from 1954 to 1973, the beloved TV show “Lassie” captured the hearts of viewers, and one of its most memorable characters was 7-year-old Timmy Martin, played by Jon Provost, who recently celebrated his 72nd birthday. At just 3 years old, Jon was unexpectedly discovered by Hollywood when his mother took him to an audition for a Jane Wyman movie. Despite his non-Hollywood background, he landed the role and soon found himself in other films.

Recalling his time on “Lassie,” Jon shared his bond with the three different dogs that played Lassie, with the strongest connection forming with the last one. He described the dogs as well-behaved, noting that the actors made more mistakes than the canine stars.

After leaving the show at 14, Jon continued his acting career alongside notable stars like Natalie Wood and Kurt Russell, avoiding the typical pitfalls of Hollywood child actors. Today, he resides in Northern California and remains a fan favorite, even receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994.

Throughout his personal life, Jon has been married twice, first to Sandy Goosens and later to Laurie Jacobson, a well-known researcher and author. “Lassie” and its enduring moral lessons continue to hold a special place in the hearts of many.
