DC fire crews help retired firefighter celebrate his 104th birthday

DC Fire and EMS celebrated Harry Kelly’s 104th birthday, their most senior retired firefighter. Kelly, who served from 1948 to 1971 and in World War II, was lauded by his fire department brethren with balloons, signs, and fire engines in his Northwest D.C. neighborhood.

The fire department tweeted a video of the event. Kelly, a dedicated public servant, expressed feeling great at 104 and even got behind the wheel of a firetruck during the celebration. Neighbor Don Lucas shared that Kelly still shovels snow and refuses help, stating, “Every time I try to help he shoos me away.” DC Fire and EMS Chief John A. Donnelley Sr. called Kelly a legend and an honor to meet.
