Jennifer Aniston, known for her role as Rachel Green in ‘Friends,’ recently disclosed the inner struggles of her late co-star, Matthew Perry, who portrayed Chandler Bing. She admitted her unawareness of Perry’s “anxiety and self-torture” in becoming Chandler Bing until the ‘Friends: The Reunion’ show.
“The facade of Chandler hid a world of anxiety and self-torture,” Aniston revealed.
Aniston shared that Perry was highly critical of himself, particularly when delivering jokes. If he didn’t get the expected laughs, he would “go into convulsions.” Perry himself admitted, “I felt like I was going to die if they didn’t laugh. It’s not healthy, for sure.”
Perry’s struggles with drug abuse were also widely known. At 49, he faced an opioid overdose leading to a burst colon, with only a 2% chance of survival. He chose recovery, saying, “I had too much respect for my co-stars to ever come to set wasted.”
Aniston also touched on her past romantic involvement with David Schwimmer, who played Ross Geller, describing it as “unrequited love.” The untimely death of Matthew Perry reminds us that those who bring us joy may have hidden battles.
