A Single Dad Adopted an Ill Child and Raised an Olympic Champion

In an inspiring journey, Jerry Windle, a single gay man, defied societal expectations to become a father. After reading about orphans in Cambodia, Jerry swiftly contacted officials, discovering life-changing information. Racing to Phnom Penh in 2000, he found Jordan, malnourished and ill after losing his biological parents. Jerry brought him to Florida, nursed him back to health, and adopted him.

Facing immediate challenges, Jordan, initially weak and using sign language, overcame health issues. At two years old, weighing only 16 pounds, his future seemed uncertain. Jerry, determined to shield Jordan from suffering, showered him with love, overcoming all obstacles.

Jordan’s life took an unexpected turn at seven, catching the eye of diving coach Ron O’Brien’s son at camp. This marked the beginning of an illustrious Olympic career, with support from Olympic gold winner Greg Louganis.

The bond between father and son, evident in a children’s book they co-authored, defines their incredible journey. Today, Jordan competes in the Olympics, representing both the United States and Cambodia, symbolized by a flag tattoo on his arm. Their story encapsulates the power of love in creating a family against all odds.
