Tyson Foods To Introduce “Bug-Based” Protein Production In The United States

Tyson Foods recently partnered with Protix, a Dutch insect-based protein specialist, planning a strategic investment to bring insect ingredient production to the US. Tyson aims to acquire a minority stake in Protix, expanding insect protein use in pet food, aquaculture, and livestock industries. The collaboration combines Tyson’s global scale with Protix’s technology for sustainable proteins. According to John R. Tyson, CFO of Tyson Foods, the insect lifecycle offers circularity in their value chain, promoting a more sustainable food system.

Protix, a leader in insect ingredients, sees the partnership as a milestone for international growth, utilizing Tyson’s byproducts as insect feedstock. While Tyson focuses on non-human consumption applications, Protix emphasizes environmentally friendly, nutritious insect ingredients as alternatives to conventional animal feed. This venture aligns with Tyson’s commitment to innovative, sustainable solutions.
