In a poignant tale circulating on social media, 60-year-old Eric Schmitt-Matzen, a Santa Claus look-alike for hospitals, recounts a heart-wrenching encounter with a terminally ill 5-year-old boy. Urgently summoned by a nurse, Eric rushed to the boy’s side without donning his Santa suit, as time was critical.
“My phone began to ring… On the other end was a nurse… a 5-year-old boy… wanted to meet Santa Claus,” shared Eric. Despite skipping the traditional costume, he brought cheer to the weak child, assuring him he wouldn’t miss Christmas. Eric presented a PAW Patrol toy, eliciting a precious smile.
Reflecting on mortality, the boy asked, “If they tell me I’m about to die, how will I know where I’m going?” Santa reassured, “You tell them you’re Santa’s number one elf and you’re going in right now.”
Tragically, the child passed away in Eric’s arms. The impact was profound, leaving Eric questioning if he could ever play Santa again.
