They received hate letters for being in love 50 years ago, but their interracial marriage is still going strong today.

Leslie Uggams, the Harlem-born singer and actress famed for her role in the Deadpool series, boasts a remarkable seven-decade career. Beyond her musical success, she hosted the groundbreaking TV variety show, “The Leslie Uggams Show,” in 1969, breaking racial barriers. Her personal life also became a captivating story when she married Grahame Pratt, a White Australian man, in 1965, defying societal norms.

Leslie’s journey began with a song for MGM at age 10, guided by her aunt, singer Eloise Uggams. Despite familial concerns, Leslie fell for Grahame after a chance meeting in Sydney. Overcoming obstacles, including hate mail, they married and built a family. Grahame managed Leslie’s career, and together, they raised two daughters.

Leslie’s professional achievements include Emmy nominations for roles in “Roots” and “Backstairs at the White House.” Despite occasional challenges, Leslie and Grahame celebrate 55 years of marriage, their enduring love defying societal expectations. In Leslie’s words, “We laugh all the time — but it ain’t always roses. We enjoy a good time together.”
