Photo Of Teacher Who Refused To Leave Student With Disability Behind On Class Trip Turns Heads, Zoom Out And You’ll See Why

In a heartwarming act of dedication, an Illinois teacher, affectionately known as “Ms. Helma,” ensured that her 4th-grade student, Maggie Vazquez, with cerebral palsy, could join a two-day hiking trip. Facing the challenge of including Maggie in the excursion to Camp Sullivan, 40 miles from their Chicago school, Academy of Global Citizenship, Ms. Helma’s commitment stood out. Rather than questioning if Maggie could go, the focus was on finding the best method.

Ms. Helma’s determination led to the purchase of a $300 product, enabling Maggie’s participation. From May 30 to June 1, around 50 fourth-grade students and 10 school staff enjoyed the camping trip. Ms. Helma shared the experience, noting, “We saw birds, frogs, and deer. We were able to do everything her peers were doing; she was one of us.”
