High school can be tough, especially when it comes to bullying. In Lincoln Middle School, Wisconsin, three students – Miles Rodriguez, Chase Vasquez, and Scooter Terrien – stood up against bullying during a basketball game. When rival fans mocked cheerleader Desiree Andrews, who has Down Syndrome, the trio took action. Chase explained, “The kids in the audience were picking on D, so we all stepped forward.” The entire team followed suit, calling a timeout and leaving the court. This act significantly reduced bullying at the school.
Desiree, inspired by the TV show “Glee,” became a cheerleader to boost her self-esteem. Her father, Cliff Andrews, was moved to tears by the boys’ support. Since the incident, they escort Desiree to class for safety. In a remarkable gesture, the school renamed the gym ‘D’s House’ in honor of Desiree, symbolizing friendship and unity. Athletic Director Timothy Nieman said, “This is what standing up, being a true team, not only a basketball team but a team of people that are going to support somebody.” The boys’ actions resonated nationwide, inspiring kindness and respect among teenagers.
