A Florida mother and son, Louise and Kalaeb Ornduff, fell victim to a carjacking when they arranged to meet potential buyers for their car. The supposed buyers, armed with guns, demanded the keys to Kalaeb’s 2016 Hyundai Veloster. Following compliance, the carjackers fled. In an attempt to thwart the robbery, Louise fired a shot, tragically hitting 18-year-old Lasupta Singletary, who later died at the hospital.
An investigation revealed the deceased and his accomplice were involved in the carjacking. While Kalaeb escaped charges, 17-year-old Jernaen Dreshaw Coleman faced second-degree felony murder and armed robbery charges. Legal opinions vary on Louise’s situation. Deputy Chief Eric Gandy emphasized the importance of determining the threat’s existence during the shot. Some support Louise’s actions, asserting self-defense, while others argue against using force as the perpetrators fled. The incident prompts a closer examination of self-defense laws in such cases.
