Sergeant Philip Dale Nix, a 22-year veteran of the Greensboro Police Department, was bid a tearful farewell at Westover Church after losing his life while off-duty, intervening in a Sheetz gas station beer theft. Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson paid homage, saying, “Rest in peace, brother. You will never be forgotten.” Detective Caroline Holliday mourned the irreplaceable loss, emphasizing Nix’s unique contribution.
Nix, a dedicated public servant, began as a 911 dispatcher and broke a family tradition of firefighting to become an officer. Thompson shared a light moment, recalling Nix’s claim of being the hero bringing doughnuts to family gatherings. Pastor Mike Carr envisioned Nix answering God’s call, urging others to “stop” violence.
Nix, part of the Family Victim Unit, collaborated with the Guilford County Family Justice Center, earning praise for advocacy. Detective Holliday clarified Nix had a friend, off-duty officer Cameron Peach, present during his final moments.
The ceremony ended with the honor guard, once led by Nix, folding the flag and offering a 21-gun salute. Sonya Desai expressed a unified front against adversity: “It is now all of us against the world.”
