Brevard County faces a contentious issue as the sheriff’s department is urged to remove the familiar slogan “In God We Trust” from their vehicles. Despite opposition from some residents and the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), Sheriff Wayne Ivey defends the long-standing tradition, citing its presence on police vehicles since the early 1900s.
The FFRF, advocating for the separation of church and state, deems the slogan inappropriate on government vehicles. Annie Laurie Gaylor, the organization’s co-president, asserts that taxpayer funds should not support religious messages on public property. She emphasizes the importance of officers relying on the law rather than a deity’s judgment.
Sheriff Wayne remains steadfast, asserting community support and the absence of financial burden on taxpayers. He highlights the legality of displaying the motto on public vehicles and rejects yielding to groups like the FFRF, vowing to continue serving the people of Brevard County without intimidation.
