Alex Dodman of Essex, UK, embarked on an ambitious project in 2020: constructing a backyard pool. Sourcing materials on Facebook, he saved thousands compared to hiring professionals. Managing everything, from excavation to tiling, Alex cut costs to around $10,000. His motivation was clear: “I did every last part of it all by myself.” Previously, he saved £75,000 building a home theater. Now, with fiancee Sarah and kids Allie and Eddie, he’s rebuilding their house. A dream of a backyard pool led Alex to research, driven by a video tutorial. Quick action followed, but challenges emerged, requiring time, energy, and problem-solving. Despite Covid delays, Alex’s persistence paid off, creating a tranquil retreat in his backyard. Inspired by a Dutch woman’s pool-building video, Alex realized his vision through determination and hard work.
