Simone Biles, the most accomplished gymnast in history, faced criticism about her hair despite her outstanding Olympic performances. Biles responded assertively to these comments.
Gymnasts typically style their hair to keep it out of their faces during routines. Despite Biles’ incredible talent, social media was rife with comments calling her hair “messy” or “unkempt.”
Biles addressed the critics on social media, posting a photo with her hair in a ponytail and writing, “Don’t come for me about my hair. It was done, but the bus has no AC, and it’s like 9,000 degrees. Oh, and a 45-minute ride.” She added, “Next time you wanna comment on a Black girl’s hair, JUST DON’T.”
Biles has been open about her hair journey, sharing in an Elle interview that social media inspired Black women to take better care of their hair. She no longer worries about how her hair is perceived professionally.
Fans defended Biles, with one commenting, “Imagine watching Simone Biles perform… only to comment on her hair!” Another wrote, “Simone Biles is making history, and people are worried about her hair.”
Biles’ message is clear: focus on her athletic abilities, not her hair.
