What a tragedy! The whole country is mourning the passing.

18-year-old rodeo roper Ace Patton Ashford tragically died in a freak accident on August 12, just weeks before achieving a lifelong goal. Ashford was helping a sick cow when he was dragged by a startled horse across an open field in Chilton, Texas. The Lott Volunteer Fire Department reported, “The man’s leg got caught, and the horse dragged him quite a distance.”

Ashford suffered head injuries but was found alive and breathing. Despite being airlifted to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

A skilled roper, Ashford had just graduated from Rosebud-Lott High School and was set to attend Hill College in the fall. He was close to fulfilling his dream.

His obituary reflected his love for rodeo and the outdoors, stating, “Ace would dedicate innumerable hours to roping in order to reach his full potential.” Tributes poured in, highlighting his kind and bright personality.

Born into a rodeo family, Ace had competed alongside his older brother. His girlfriend, Sydney Boatright, wrote on Facebook, “I love you forever, Ace Patton.”
