Why ‘CSI’ Star Gary Sinise, Whose Son Died at 33, Left Hollywood

Gary Sinise, known for his roles in *Forrest Gump* and *CSI: NY*, left Hollywood to prioritize his family and philanthropy. In 2018, his son Mac was diagnosed with chordoma, a rare cancer, just months after his wife Moira’s breast cancer diagnosis. “I had to stop traveling away from my family while their lives were on the line,” Gary said.

Gary and Moira, married since 1981, shared a bond strengthened by humor and support. Moira eventually went into remission, but Mac’s condition worsened. Gary described the journey as overwhelming: “Trying to find drugs and doctors…was like a full-time job.” Mac, a talented musician, continued creating despite his physical challenges, leaving behind an album released posthumously.

Mac passed away in early 2024 at age 33. Reflecting on his son’s work, Gary shared, “He achieved something he set out to do…that gave me a lot of joy.” Mac’s contributions to music and the Gary Sinise Foundation remain a testament to his resilience.

In 2021, Gary’s family relocated to Tennessee for a quieter life. “It was a family decision,” he said, valuing the state’s community and cultural vibrancy. The move allowed him to deepen his focus on the Gary Sinise Foundation, supporting veterans and first responders.

Gary’s journey underscores his devotion to family and making a difference. “I’m glad to be here. I love it,” he said of Tennessee, where he continues to live a life centered on purpose and healing.
