Wildfire Erupts Near Malibu, Mandatory Evacuations Issued

On Monday, December 9, a 100-acre brush fire broke out in Malibu Canyon, forcing mandatory evacuations early Tuesday morning. Authorities ordered residents east of Malibu Canyon Road and south of Piuma Road to leave immediately.

As the flames neared Pepperdine University, the school activated its shelter-in-place protocol. A statement on its Facebook page instructed, “All community members on the Malibu campus are directed to shelter in place in the Tyler Campus Center or Payson Library.” The protocol, coordinated with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, ensures campus safety despite broader evacuation orders.

The wildfire has also spread toward the Serra Retreat neighborhood, leading to additional evacuation mandates. Dry winds have accelerated the fire’s movement, complicating firefighting efforts.

Los Angeles County has launched an emergency webpage through its Emergency Operations Center to provide updates on evacuation zones and resources.

Residents are urged to check alertla.org for updates, follow @LACoFDPIO and @LHSLASD on social media, and use the hashtag #FranklinFire for real-time information. Authorities continue to prioritize public safety as firefighting efforts intensify.
