A doctor has highlighted overlooked signs of thyroid cancer, a disease “rising in young people.” Dr. Ahmed (@dra_says on TikTok) explained, “This cancer is on the rise. Over the next five years, it’s predicted to increase in incidence more than any other type.”
Thyroid cancer originates in the thyroid gland, located in the lower neck, which produces hormones affecting digestion, the heart, and muscles. Dr. Ahmed emphasized key symptoms:
- A painless lump in the lower neck that may grow over time
- A hoarse voice lasting more than four weeks
- A persistent sore throat (over four to six weeks)
- Difficulty swallowing or a pressing sensation in the throat
He also noted general signs, like a persistently red, flushed face, looser stools, unexplained weight loss, or a chronic cough. While rare in the UK, Dr. Ahmed urged anyone with these symptoms to get checked, saying, “It doesn’t mean you’ve got thyroid cancer, but it’s worth investigating.”
Viewers shared experiences, such as discovering cancer through hair loss or a tiny lump initially dismissed by doctors. One person commented, “So glad I pushed for removal because it ended up being cancer.”
