Bishop responds to Trump’s 5-word comment after she asked him to ‘have mercy’ on LGBTQ+ people and migrants

The Bishop of Washington urged President Trump to show mercy to LGBTQ+ people and migrants, stating, “In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.” She highlighted the humanity of marginalized groups, reminding the president, “There is room for mercy, a broader compassion.”

Trump dismissed her plea as “not too exciting” and said, “They could do much better.”

In response, the bishop emphasized, “I wanted to counter, as gently as I could, with a reminder of their humanity and their place in our wider community.”
