In his second term, Donald Trump has sparked global outrage with his interest in acquiring Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark. “We need it for national security,” Trump stated, citing threats from Russia and China. Denmark firmly rejected the idea, with European Parliament member Anders Vistisen telling Trump to “f**k off,” emphasizing Greenland’s integral role in the Danish kingdom for 800 years.
Trump’s controversial phone call with Danish PM Mette Frederiksen left officials alarmed at the U.S.’s “serious and potentially dangerous” interest. Greenland’s PM Múte Egede also dismissed the idea, declaring, “Greenland is not for sale and will never be for sale.”
Despite an independence movement in Greenland, they have no intention of becoming U.S. territory. Trump has even floated other controversial ideas, such as renaming the Gulf of Mexico and making Canada the “51st state,” adding to the international backlash.
