Melania and Donald Trump’s unusual sleeping arrangements at White House revealed

The 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue residence, famously home to U.S. presidents, features six levels, 132 rooms, including 35 bathrooms, and multiple bedrooms and offices. When Donald Trump and Melania returned to the White House in January 2017, reports surfaced about their unusual living arrangement. Allegedly, the couple did not share a bedroom during Trump’s first presidency—and likely won’t this time either.

Author Michael Wolff wrote, “Trump retreated to his own bedroom—the first time since the Kennedy White House that a presidential couple maintained separate rooms.” Biographer Mary Jordan confirmed this, noting, “She likes to be isolated. He is a loner. They’re perfectly happy to be separated.”

Historically, separate bedrooms for presidential couples weren’t uncommon. Annette Dunlap explained, “In the late 19th century, sharing a bed symbolized poverty.” Despite their physical separation, the Trumps maintained frequent communication, though their relationship remains “complicated.”
