Nurses do more than give meds and follow doctors’ orders—they offer comfort, encouragement, and a listening ear. Brandalyn Mae Porter, a Texas retirement home nurse, is one of those who makes a difference.

One day, while helping a new resident freshen up, she offered to paint her nails. The woman hesitated, saying, “My hands are ugly, I don’t want to draw attention to them.”

Brandalyn gently reminded her, “Your hands tell the story of your life. They tell the story of love, of care, and adventure. These hands have touched and held things that most people can only wish to one day.” Inspired by those words, the resident chose pink.
