Doctor Reveals 7 Health Issues Hidden in Your Nails

Your nails can reveal vital clues about your health. Changes in shape, color, or texture may indicate underlying conditions, from heart disease to anemia. Dr. Sara Norris explains, “Nail health reflects nutritional intake and digestion,” making them an important health indicator.

Beau’s Lines & Clubbing
Deep ridges across nails, known as Beau’s lines, may appear after illnesses like COVID-19 or chemotherapy. “These lines can signal a temporary halt in nail growth,” says Dr. Bhavini Shah. Clubbing, where nails curve downward with swollen fingertips, could suggest heart disease. Symptoms like fatigue and chest pain should prompt a doctor’s visit.

Spoon Nails & Pitting
Spoon-shaped nails, curving inward, often indicate iron-deficiency anemia. Dr. Shah advises a blood test if spooning occurs. Small dents in nails, or pitting, may be linked to psoriasis, eczema, or alopecia areata. Severe cases might need corticosteroid treatment.

Dark Streaks & Terry’s Nails
A vertical dark streak may signal melanoma. “Seek a dermatologist if discoloration spreads,” warns Dr. Shah. Terry’s nails, mostly white with a pink tip, are linked to liver disease, diabetes, or heart issues.

Yellow Nails
Often due to fungal infections, yellow nails can also indicate thyroid disease, diabetes, or lung problems. If unexplained, medical evaluation is recommended.

Regular nail checks can help detect hidden health issues early.
