Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner died at 70 after a medical emergency following President Trump’s Congress speech, according to Democratic lawmakers. Turner, who had battled bone cancer, was seen experiencing distress in the Capitol tunnel before police intervened.
Turner previously served as Houston mayor from 2016 to 2024 and was a state lawmaker for over 25 years. After Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s death, Turner was chosen to replace her on the November ballot.
President Trump’s address received positive feedback, with 76% of viewers approving, according to a CBS News/YouGov poll. Many described the speech as “hopeful,” “unifying,” and “inspiring.” The poll indicated that 68% believed Trump presented a clear plan to fight inflation.
The survey found Trump’s message resonated beyond his base, with only 51% of viewers identifying as Republicans. Over three-quarters supported his proposals on immigration, border security, and reducing government waste.
Trump earned praise from both Republicans and media figures. Fox’s Brit Hume called him a “political colossus,” while Chris Cillizza noted, “That was a very effective speech… aimed squarely at issues where the public is with Trump.”
