Supreme Court’s 5-4 Ruling Overturns Trump Administration’s Freeze on Foreign Aid: A Divided Decision with Far-Reaching Implications

A divided Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration’s request to keep billions in foreign aid frozen. The 5-4 ruling did not specify when the funds must be released, allowing further disputes in lower courts.

Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Barrett, Kagan, Sotomayor, and Jackson formed the majority. The four conservative dissenters—Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh—opposed the decision.

The majority urged lower courts to “clarify what obligations the government must fulfill.”

In dissent, Alito said he was “stunned” by the ruling, criticizing the lower court’s order to unfreeze the funds.

The issue remains unresolved in lower courts.
