Donald Trump was announced as the 47th president of the United States on 6 November after defeating Kamala Harris. At 78, he became the first convicted felon to serve as president. After his victory, Trump made a series of promises, many of which he’s already acting on. He launched controversial tariffs and focused on his ‘America First’ foreign policy, border security, and discrediting the climate crisis.
Trump quickly turned his attention to the LGBTQ+ community. He signed an executive order recognising only two genders in the US and banned the Pride flag from government buildings. Caitlyn Jenner, who transitioned in 2015, congratulated him on Instagram with a photo of herself, Trump, his granddaughter Kai Madison, and Elon Musk. She wrote: “Hope is back in America,” and added, “Let’s Make America Great Again!”
But Trump’s track record on trans rights is clear. He vowed to order all federal agencies to end programmes that “promote… gender transition at any age.” He also pledged to slash funding from hospitals offering gender-affirming care.
Despite Jenner’s praise, many remain confused by Trump’s stance. His actions so far suggest a rollback of trans rights rather than support.
