Shirley Nunn’s death expose failures in care for families

Tragic Deaths of Devoted Mother and Son Could Have Been Prevented

In 2021, Shirley Nunn, 67, and her son Steven, 50, were found dead in their Middlesborough home. Shirley, battling terminal lung cancer, had cared for Steven since his brain injury at 11 left him with “cerebral palsy and epilepsy.”

Despite her “worsening health” and depression, she remained his full-time caregiver. A Domestic Homicide Review found her “psychological needs were not properly addressed.”

Two days after her hospital discharge, both were found dead. The report suggests Shirley, feeling “there were no other options” for Steven’s care, made a heartbreaking decision.
