Donald Trump has once again pushed for the US to annex Greenland, insisting, “We need Greenland, very importantly, for international security.” He declared that the US must take control “one way or the other,” a statement that angered many Greenlanders. Trump justified his stance by citing Chinese and Russian warships in the region. “If you look at Greenland right now, you have Chinese and Russian ships all over the place,” he said. “We’re not relying on Denmark or anybody else… we’re talking about world peace.”
JD Vance, a Trump ally, visited a US military base in Greenland, joking about the extreme cold. Meanwhile, Trump continued emphasizing that Greenland was crucial for “protection, not only for our country, [but] of the world.” Beyond security, Greenland holds valuable natural resources and is strategically located along emerging Arctic trade routes. However, its residents have firmly rejected Trump’s ambitions, making annexation unlikely.
Greenlanders responded coldly, with some saying they’d turn their backs on Vance due to the “disrespect” shown by the US. Trump’s claims of bringing “world peace” through annexation were widely criticized, with many branding him an “embarrassment.”
