Grandmother sentenced after baby left in hot car dies less than a year after another grandchild died while in her care

A Florida grandmother, **Tracey Nix**, has been sentenced to **five years in prison** after the tragic death of her seven-month-old granddaughter, **Uriel Schock**, who was left in a hot car.

On **November 1, 2022**, Nix had taken Uriel to lunch, strapped her into the car seat, then drove home. Surveillance footage confirmed the trip. Once home, she parked, rolled up the windows, and went inside to “talk to her dog and practice piano,” according to the affidavit. She later told police, *“I just forgot.”*

The temperature had reached **90°F** that day. Uriel was left in the car for hours until Nix’s husband found her unresponsive. Despite performing CPR, Uriel died of hyperthermia.

In court, Nix admitted, *“I literally forgot for a long period of time. I’m broken about what happened.”*

This was not the first tragedy. Less than a year earlier, Nix’s **16-month-old grandson, Ezra**, drowned after wandering into a pond while she napped.

Though she was found **not guilty of aggravated manslaughter**, Nix was convicted of leaving a child in a vehicle and causing great harm.

At sentencing, Judge Brandon Rafool stated: *“Uriel is not an isolated incident… I do not believe she is showing remorse; I believe she is showing sorrow.”*
