Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles is facing backlash after responding to former swimmer Riley Gaines, who mocked Champlin Park High School’s softball team for turning off comments on their championship post. Gaines wrote, “Comments off lol. To be expected when your star player is a boy.”
Biles fired back, “You’re truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser.” She urged Gaines to stop targeting transgender athletes and instead work toward inclusive sports, possibly with separate categories for transgender athletes.
Gaines doubled down, saying, “It’s not women’s responsibility to find ways to include men in female sports.” She defended her stance and later accused Biles of making things personal, referencing a tweet where Biles wrote, “Bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male.”
Public reaction was mixed. Some fans supported Biles, calling her “a class act” and praising her leadership. Others criticized her, saying, “You are no longer a role model for little girls.”
Gaines, a 12-time All-American, became an activist in 2022 after tying with Lia Thomas at the NCAA championships. She now advocates for single-sex sports and has spoken before Congress and several legislatures, continuing to push for Title IX protections.
