Air India has confirmed compensation for the families of the 242 victims from today’s fatal crash of Flight AI 171 in Ahmedabad. The London-bound plane crashed shortly after takeoff into a medical college hostel in Meghani Nagar.
“There are 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian,” the airline said. Though officials initially believed there were no survivors, police have now confirmed one.
Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran said, “We are deeply anguished by the tragic event involving Air India Flight 171. No words can adequately express the grief we feel.” He announced ₹1 crore (about \$116,000) will be given to each victim’s family, along with full medical support for the injured and assistance in rebuilding the BJ Medical hostel.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the tragedy “heartbreaking beyond words,” while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the crash as “devastating.”
Dramatic footage online shows the aircraft’s rapid descent followed by a fiery explosion and thick smoke near the airport.
