An Air India flight bound for London crashed minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 241 of 242 people on board. Only one passenger, British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, survived. “Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed,” he said.
Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 with 244 people on board, lost contact seconds after reaching 625 feet. It crashed into a medical college dorm in Meghani Nagar, Ahmedabad. “We are ascertaining the details and will share further updates,” Air India posted.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene. Smoke rose from the wreckage, and local TV showed debris lodged in buildings. “We are on highest alert,” said India’s Civil Aviation Minister. Several medical students also died in the dorm crash.
Captain Sumeet Sabharwal sent a Mayday call before losing contact, showing a final attempt to save the aircraft.
Vishwash, injured but conscious, ran through rubble to safety. “He was talking… and hobbling,” a witness video shows. His brother, who was also on the flight, remains missing.
