Pilot of Air India flight may have saved thousands of lives with final heroic act moments before crash

An Air India flight bound for London crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 241 of the 242 onboard and eight people on the ground. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner collided with a medical college hostel, but narrowly missed a densely populated residential area and a nearby hospital. Many believe the pilot may have intentionally diverted the crash to reduce casualties.

A Reddit user noted the plane “crashed in a somewhat loosely populated area” and just “400 metres north is a civil hospital… \[and] adjacent is a high-density residential area.” Aviation officials confirmed the plane was carrying almost a full load of fuel.

Among the victims was Arjun Patoliya, a father traveling to fulfill his late wife’s final wish. Their two daughters, now orphaned, were just four and eight years old.

Captain Sumeet Sabharwal reportedly sent a mayday call: “No thrust, losing power, unable to lift.” Experts suggest cockpit error may be to blame. YouTuber Captain Steve theorized a flap was mistakenly retracted instead of the landing gear. Former pilot Alastair Rosenschein agreed, saying, “It does look like the aircraft didn’t have its take-off flap setting.”

The black box has been recovered and the investigation is ongoing.
