Your Guide to Preparing for the Gynecologist: 10 Key Dos and Don’ts

**Going to the Gynecologist: Top Do’s and Don’ts**

Going to the gynecologist can feel awkward or stressful, no matter how many times you’ve been. But a few smart steps can make the visit easier and more comfortable for both you and your doctor.

**1. Don’t Pee Right Before Your Appointment**
You might feel nervous and want to go, but try to hold it. “If your doctor needs a urine sample, it is important to avoid using the bathroom just before your appointment.” Urine tests help check for infections or pregnancy, so arriving with a full bladder is helpful.

**2. Avoid Sex the Night Before**
Skip sexual activity for at least 24 hours before your visit. “Sexual activity can temporarily alter the vaginal environment,” which may affect test results. Even condoms can cause changes due to spermicide.

**3. Skip Pelvic Grooming**
Don’t worry about how much hair you have. “The gynecologist doesn’t care.” In fact, shaving or waxing right before can cause irritation or small cuts.

**4. Go Regularly**
Checkups are important for your health, even if they’re uncomfortable. “You can’t (and absolutely shouldn’t) avoid regular check-ups.”

**5. Share With Others**
Help other women feel prepared too—share these tips.
