Acne, or acne vulgaris, is a common long-term skin condition caused when hair follicles get clogged with dead skin cells and oil. It mostly affects areas with oily skin like the face, chest, and back. Symptoms include blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and sometimes scars.
“Acne can impact confidence, self-esteem, and cause anxiety or depression,” especially in teens and young adults.
Hormones known as androgens increase oil production in the skin, which helps feed the growth of *Cutibacterium acnes*, a bacterium linked to acne flare-ups.
Genetics are a major factor—about 80% of acne cases are inherited. However, the links between acne and diet, smoking, hygiene, or sun exposure remain unclear or weak.
Though acne is not dangerous, its effects on mental health can be serious, making proper treatment and support important.
