Tragedy On The Volcano: Tourist Dies After Days Trapped 1,600 Ft Underground

A tragic accident claimed the life of 26-year-old Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins, who died after falling 1,600 feet into a volcano crater on Mount Rinjani, Indonesia. She had been hiking with a guide but asked for a break. According to her sister, “She didn’t know what to do,” and when the guide returned, Juliana had already fallen.

The area was difficult and slippery, with other hikers describing conditions as “really hard,” especially before sunrise with poor visibility.

Juliana was located using a drone, “stuck on a rock cliff at a depth of 500 meters and visually motionless,” according to Gunung Rinjani National Park. Rescue efforts were hindered by dangerous overhangs, and she was confirmed dead days later.

Her family shared the heartbreaking news online: “With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive.”

Brazilian senator Tereza Cristina called for an investigation, saying, “In practice, Juliana was left behind twice: on the dangerous trail and after she fell off the cliff.”
