Early Morning 2.8 Magnitude Quake Rocks Victoria’s Woods Point, Startling Hundreds

A 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck Woods Point, Victoria, around 5:20 a.m. Wednesday, startling many residents. The tremor, recorded just 1 km below the surface, was felt up to 178 km away in Melbourne.

Locals quickly turned to social media to share their experiences. “Literally woke up from a dream about an earthquake. I feel vindicated,” one user posted. Another added, “That was such a sudden jolt I was legit confused if something hit the building or not.”

The quake was mild, with no injuries or damage reported, but it was felt as far as Carrum Downs and Sunbury.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are usually not harmful, but can still surprise early risers and light sleepers.
