Melania Trump’s immigration history is under renewed scrutiny after Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) raised questions during a June 25 House Judiciary Committee hearing. She criticized the Trump administration’s harsh immigration policies and asked why there wasn’t more focus on “integrity” when it came to Trump’s own family.
Melania entered the U.S. using an EB-1 visa, often called the “Einstein visa,” typically reserved for people with “extraordinary abilities” such as Nobel or Pulitzer winners, Olympic athletes, or top experts. Crockett questioned whether Melania, a fashion model, met that standard, saying, “Melania, a model—though not on the level of Tyra Banks or Cindy Crawford—was granted an EB-1. Let’s be real, the numbers just don’t add up.”
Melania became a U.S. citizen in July 2006. The comments reignited online debate, with critics calling out the “hypocrisy” of Trump’s anti-immigrant stance given his own family’s immigrant background.
One Reddit user wrote, “Imagine if a Democrat’s spouse had this background—the outrage would be off the charts.” Another added sarcastically, “I guess it’s different if you marry a billionaire.” Despite staying out of the spotlight, Melania’s visa story continues to fuel controversy.
