Can Your Eyes Reveal Diabetes or Cancer? Don’t Miss the Signs

Your eyes reveal more than just vision problems—they can show signs of serious diseases. “Comprehensive eye exams have the potential to uncover signs of various illnesses,” including diabetes, cancer, and brain tumors. Optometrists are trained to spot early warning signs that may otherwise go unnoticed.

For instance, diabetes can cause **diabetic retinopathy**, where damaged retinal blood vessels lead to floaters, blurred vision, or even blindness. Even without symptoms, this condition may be spotted during a dilated eye exam.

Eye exams can also detect signs of **cancer**, such as **ocular melanoma**, through dark spots, bulges, or abnormal blood vessels. Additionally, tumors or aneurysms in the brain can alter the optic nerve, which trained professionals can identify.

Other systemic diseases like **high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis, or lupus** can also affect the eyes, often through changes in the retinal blood vessels—again, only visible to an expert.

Ultimately, early detection is key. “This is why visiting your doctor semi-annually or annually is an important step towards safeguarding your health.” Don’t wait for symptoms—routine eye exams could save your vision and your life.
