UK officials are warning citizens to prepare for possible direct threats to the homeland, including war. A new national security strategy describes a “heightened global instability” due to growing tensions, especially with Russia. It states, *“We face confrontation with those who are threatening our security,”* highlighting Russia’s war in Ukraine and global energy and supply chain vulnerabilities.
“For the first time in many years,” the strategy says, *“we have to actively prepare for the possibility of the UK homeland coming under direct threat.”* Although war is not seen as imminent, the government stresses the need for public readiness through its “UK Prepare” initiative.
Citizens are advised to stock essential items for emergencies like power cuts or supply shortages. These include wind-up or battery radios, torches, spare batteries, bottled water (2.5–3L per person daily), canned food, baby supplies, pet food, and a first aid kit. Hand sanitiser and wet wipes are also suggested in case water access is lost.
The guidance also recommends a “grab bag” with key items—documents, medicine, warm clothes—*“If you’re forced to leave your home suddenly… a ready-to-go bag can save valuable time.”* The overall goal is to boost resilience and avoid panic in potential future crises.
