John Cena credits the 2015 film *Trainwreck*—in which he starred alongside Amy Schumer—with launching his Hollywood career. “It really did wonders for me,” he said, reflecting on the film during a *Heads of State* press tour.
Cena, once best known for WWE and flop films like *Fred: The Movie*, played Steven, Amy’s overly macho boyfriend in *Trainwreck*. The movie featured an awkward sex scene that stuck with viewers. Cena called it “real embarrassing” but praised Schumer for making him feel at ease: “Amy is an angel, she made the environment so comfortable.”
Schumer joked about the scene, saying Cena was “inside her,” later clarifying it was a joke involving a “prosthetic wooden penis.” Cena revealed he wore a “spandex sock” during filming, and producers dropped most of his lines in favor of a “stunt sex scene.”
The film helped Cena transition into comedy (*Blockers*, *Vacation Friends*) and eventually into action roles like *Peacemaker*.
Cena added: “There’s always a special place for Amy and Judd \[Apatow] in my heart… it’s a fun movie to watch.” *Trainwreck* is streaming on Netflix, while *Heads of State* is now on Prime Video.
