Walmart, Dollar Tree, and Amazon have recalled over 67,000 aerosol deodorants after lab tests found benzene—a cancer-causing chemical—in products from brands like Brut, Sure, Right Guard, Alvera, and CureL. “The contamination came from the propellants used to deliver the product,” not intentional ingredients, according to experts. The recall was issued by TCP HOT Acquisition LLC.

These products were sold between January and November 2022, so many people may still have them at home. “Even if the product looks and smells normal, it may still be contaminated.” Consumers are urged to stop using them immediately and follow local hazardous waste disposal guidelines—never toss aerosol cans in the regular trash.

Benzene is especially dangerous because it “enters the body easily through both inhalation and skin contact.” The CDC lists it as a known carcinogen that can damage bone marrow and lead to leukemia. Using these sprays in enclosed spaces like bathrooms increases health risks for everyone in the home—including children and pets.
