Your Guide to Preparing for the Gynecologist: 10 Key Dos and Don’ts

Going to the gynecologist might feel awkward, but it’s a key step in caring for your health. A little preparation can make the visit smoother and more helpful.

**Timing matters**
Avoid scheduling your appointment during your period, unless it’s necessary. “Blood can sometimes interfere with certain tests like Pap smears.”

**Skip sprays and sex**
Don’t douche, use vaginal sprays, or have sex 24 hours before your visit. These can affect test results. “Your gynecologist wants to see your body’s normal state.”

**Be prepared and honest**
Write down questions or symptoms beforehand so you don’t forget them. Bring a record of your menstrual cycle and a list of medications or supplements. Also, “being open and honest allows them to give you the best possible care” — including details about your sexual history.

**Dress comfortably**
You’ll likely change into a gown, so wear clothes that are easy to remove. Comfort helps ease any anxiety.

**Don’t stress**
It’s normal to feel nervous, but try to relax. “Think of it as an act of self-care, just like a dental checkup.” Being informed and prepared turns the visit into a positive experience.
