NYPD Officer Killed In Midtown Shooting Was Expecting Third Child

Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old NYPD officer and father of two with a third child on the way, was shot and killed Monday in Midtown Manhattan while working a second job in security. The shooter, 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, opened fire with an M4 assault rifle near a building housing NFL and Blackstone offices, killing five people, including Islam, before taking his own life.

Mayor Eric Adams praised Islam for “saving lives” and called him “a person of faith” who “loved this city.” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Islam “died as he lived: a hero,” and described his death as a cold-blooded sacrifice. His colleagues and loved ones described him as hardworking, selfless, and deeply devoted to his family.

Security footage showed Tamura entering the lobby armed with a silencer-equipped rifle. Witnesses described the sound as “a barrage of shots.” He later died by suicide on the 33rd floor. Two other people were arrested; one reportedly shouted, “Free Palestine, I’m not the active shooter.”

The motive remains unclear, though Tamura may have been targeting NFL offices. Tributes poured in, with EMS First writing, “Tonight, a hero made the ultimate, selfless sacrifice.”
