More than 22 years after the 9/11 attacks, never-before-seen footage of the Twin Towers’ collapse has been released by Kei Sugimoto. Shot on a Sony VX2000 camera, the video was recently discovered among old tapes in his closet and quickly digitized to prevent loss.

Filmed from a rooftop at 64 St Marks Place in New York, the footage captures a rare north-facing view of the Twin Towers as black smoke billows moments before their collapse. “This footage offers a unique perspective not seen from the south or east,” one viewer noted.

The 9/11 attacks, carried out by 19 Al-Qaeda hijackers, killed nearly 3,000 people and forever altered U.S. policy and global security.

Released on July 23, 2023, Sugimoto’s video quickly went viral. Many expressed surprise that new 9/11 footage could still emerge. “It’s crazy that we’re almost 23 years out and still getting new footage,” wrote one Reddit user.

This discovery underscores the importance of preserving personal archives. As one commenter reflected, “Makes me wonder how much history is being stored in people’s attics or basements waiting to be unearthed.”
