An abscess near the mouth can often be linked to acne, also called “acne vulgaris,” a long-term skin condition that happens when “dead skin cells and oil from the skin clog hair follicles.” It usually shows as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, oily skin, and sometimes scarring, affecting areas rich in oil glands like the face, chest, and back.

The condition can impact mental health, leading to “lack of confidence, anxiety, reduced self-esteem, and, in extreme cases, depression.” About 80% of cases are tied to genetics, while the roles of diet and smoking remain unclear. Cleanliness or sun exposure are not considered causes.

In both men and women, hormones called androgens can increase sebum production, making acne worse. Another factor is the overgrowth of the bacterium *Cutibacterium acnes*, naturally found on the skin.

Although acne can’t always be fully prevented, understanding its causes helps in managing it effectively.
