Viral judge Frank Caprio passes away aged 88

Judge Frank Caprio, known as the “nicest judge in the world,” has died at 88 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. His son, Frank T. Caprio, confirmed the news on August 20.

The Rhode Island native rose to fame through Caught in Providence, a reality TV show where his compassion in traffic and minor cases won millions of viewers. Clips of his rulings often went viral, showing his humor and empathy. “I don’t wear a badge under my robe. I wear a heart under my robe,” he told NBC in 2017.

A statement on his Instagram read: “Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions… His warmth, humour, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.”

Caprio revealed his cancer diagnosis in December 2023 and completed treatment earlier this year. Just a day before his passing, he shared from the hospital: “As I continue this difficult battle, your prayers will lift my spirit.”

He is survived by his wife of six decades, Joyce, five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. His family described him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
