What a huge loss, we had to say goodbye to a legendary comedian…

The world is mourning the loss of comedy legend Bob Newhart, who passed away peacefully at 94 on July 18, 2024, in Los Angeles.

Known for his subtle wit and deadpan style, Newhart became famous with The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart, the first comedy album to hit #1 on the Billboard charts. His sitcoms The Bob Newhart Show (1972–78) and Newhart (1982–90) cemented his place as a TV icon. His characters, like Dr. Robert Hartley and Dick Loudon, reflected “civility, decency, and quiet strength” — traits Newhart himself embodied.

His career spanned generations, from black-and-white TV to guest roles on ER, The Big Bang Theory, and Young Sheldon, where he finally won an Emmy in 2013. In 2022, he joked, “I think people find comfort in knowing there’s still someone out there who hasn’t raised their voice in 60 years.”

Tributes poured in: Steve Martin called him “one of the purest, funniest voices we’ve ever had.” Carol Burnett said, “Bob didn’t just tell jokes — he told stories.” Conan O’Brien added, “You don’t have to be loud to be brilliant.”

Newhart leaves behind his wife Ginny, four children, ten grandchildren, and countless fans. His gentle humor and kindness will live on in every laugh he inspired.
